What happens at a patient of the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Oro Valley Hospital:
- 1:1 therapy 15 hours a week. The intensity of the therapy sets the rehabilitation unit apart from other facilities that provide therapy at a lesser level for optimal recovery.
- An important part of your integration back into the community is having your meals out of bed. We encourage you to eat lunch and dinner in the dining room.
- Your length of stay in the rehab unit is determined by how quickly the goals are met which have been established by you and your rehab care team. During your stay, the rehab care team holds a weekly team conference to discuss your progress achieving your goals, your continued stay and any needs you may have at discharge.
- During rehab, you get dressed daily and work with the therapy staff on daily living activities, such as eating, grooming, bathing, showering, dressing, and transfers.
Visits from family and friends are very important and encouraged for your emotional well being and recovery. You and your rehab care team can set a visitation schedule that allows for visits yet maximizes your therapy sessions. Your family or caregiver may participate in caregiver training with the therapist before your discharge. Caregiver training will be coordinated and scheduled ahead of time by your rehab care team.
Your care is coordinated by the Rehabilitation Medical Director who is a Physiatrist. A Physiatrist specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation and works directly with your rehab care team to coordinate your rehabilitation needs. Depending on your medical needs, you may have several physicians managing your care.
Meet your Rehabilitation Medical Director, Thomas Coury, D.O.
Thomas Coury is a board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician who completed his residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He then completed his fellowship training in Interventional Physiatry at Southwest Spine and Sports in Scottsdale.
Dr. Coury's inspiration for his chosen specialty came through a physical therapist classmate while attending medical school as well as his experience in the field during an externship at the University of Utah. His practice philosophy is functional restoration. His goal for every patient is to maintain or regain function in their work and recreational activities, and to support their maintaining an active lifestyle. Dr. Coury is a musculoskeletal medicine specialist and enjoys treating patients who are motivated to reclaiming their active lifestyle using nonsurgical means.
Your individualized plan of care is coordinated by the rehab care team consisting of the Rehabilitation Director, Rehabilitation Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Social Services. You may also work with the Dietician, Pharmacists and other departments during your rehab stay.
